** OWNERS OF OBD II VEHICLES
(1996 AND NEWER)
Drive Cycle Procedure Fee
All 1996 and newer vehicles are equipped with an On Board Diagnostic System (OBD II) that monitors the performance of emission system components. If you are bringing your vehicle in to us for service because the "CHECK ENGINE" light or "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light is "ON" or illuminated, the process of making repairs to the vehicle will cause the emission system monitors to be set to a "NOT READY" status. (This is done by the vehicle's computer not by the technician.)
In order (for you or the technician) to verify that:
- The repairs were made correctly;
- The OBD II system is working correctly;
- There are no additional engine performance problems;
the vehicle's proper diagnostic procedure requires that this (or any) shop perform a Drive Cycle Procedure (as specified by the vehicle manufacturer) to set the emission system monitors to "READY". The cost of this Drive Cycle Procedure is listed as a separate charge on your estimate.
Drive Cycle fee to reset monitors to "READY" - $45.00
The fee is dependent upon the length of time to perform the reset Drive Cycle Procedure as specified by the manufacturer of your vehicle, usually 30 to 60 minutes. Each vehicle is different.
This charge can be removed from the estimate if you, as the owner of the vehicle, wish to reset the emission system monitors to "READY" by driving the vehicle over the following 4 to 7 days (that time period can vary from vehicle to vehicle and due to various computer determined factors). If you select this option, be aware that in order to verify that the repairs made by this shop actually repaired the problem, the monitors must be reset to "READY" and the "CHECK ENGINE" light or "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light must stay off. If the "CHECK ENGINE" light or "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light turns back on (after the reset driving period), you will need to bring the vehicle back for additional service or repairs. (The reset procedure can ONLY be done in one of those two methods. You and your technician can know the result right away or you may possibly have to bring the vehicle back after the reset period of time. The choice is yours. This is NOT a charge that we arbitrarily set, this is a charge that is subject to use by ALL service facilities.) See more information about On Board Diagnostics (OBD and OBD II) here.
